Making It! Book Interview

In the last month of July, Chris Tyrell released his latest book ‘Making It!: Case Studies of Successful Canadian Visual Artists.  His first book, ‘Artist Survival Skills’ is a must have for any canadian working artist, and this second book is even moreso.

Chris and I met over discussions on his first book last spring and in turn he ended up interviewing me for my own chapter in this book, based on my experiences with product sponsorship and the Sakura connection. I think it turned into a great interview and explanation of my own personal experience within that segment of an artists working experiences. I believe Chris’s literary work on these subjects really add a depth to the resources available for working early to mid-career canadian specific artists.

You can get your hands on a copy of Chris Tyrell’s book through Opus Art | Making It! Book

We make art based on our lives and the views we see get interpreted through out hands and visions to be spat out on to canvas or paper or cloth as this stuff called ‘art’. Because it is a product of our lives, sometimes our lives get so busy we dont have time to spare to post things up and explain where we are currently at.. I have been in one of those kind of timelines for the last year or so – just working and living, and loving.. But do not fear – Venice isn’t dead and I am not either. There is a whole bunch of new things that will be coming along shortly..

Questions need answers

Where?

Where are the relevant leaders within our own communities that we can directly relate to and engage? Who do we have to look to as people that are real, solid examples of role models? This should not be a foreign concept at all. We should not have to reach far at all to find the names and faces we are looking for. This is a void within our personal lives and greater communities that is in a constant need of fufilment at this point.

I ask you,  what are the next generation getting from us? What is to be there inheritance? What are we handing down to them both directly and indirectly? and even more importantly what legacy are we leaving for them?

I am not asking for entertainers, movie stars or mainstream artists promoted and published within an attention grabbing structure of programming through various media. I mean educators, mentors, adventurers and dreamers – inspiring minds caught on constructive concerns. The lives that are making roads within communities with a shovel and a back and the weight of their words and hearts concern. Using their minds and available time towards positive pursuits.

Politics are not, and should not be, a foreign concept. Life is political, but seriously where are those leaders? And not just out of politics and that realm but out of every day life. Where are the people showing the roads they have uncovered and in example offering up to us a million more possible avenues than what we ever thought imaginable? We need more lighthouses beaming out through the footsteps and fog to share in these journeys.
If you don’t ever reach for the sky, how are you ever going to raise that ceiling, push through that roof and find the brilliance of potential within your own life? We have a direct influence on and a responsibility to our peers and the communities we exist within, what are we going to do about it today, tomorrow and into the future? Who are we really and what are we going to do with the things we can control and change and explore in our own lives?

I have a lot of questions. Questions are good, questions need answers.

‘Afoot Magazine’ Featured Content

Dmitri and the guys over at ‘Afoot Magazine’ are knocking down doors to make their magazine the premier lifestyle/culture resource for the lower mainland community. I had the opportunity to connect with their crew and rock a bit of work which will be in their first issue coming out shortly, but in the meantime they were nice enough to hook up a bit of coverage on their site as well as share the stop-motion clip I did of my recent painting ‘Childhoods Dream’.

Great work these guys are putting out their, grinding to make a go of it in a sea of shoddy media these days. Check out their stuff and the feature they did on me.

Props to Dmitri and Sebastiaan for the support!
